About
Stuðlar is a small visitor pavilion at the foot of a basalt column cliff on the Snæfellsnes coast. Rather than imitate the hexagonal columns, the building borrows their logic: a cluster of cast-in-place concrete prisms of different heights, each holding a single function — shelter, toilets, a map room and a bench facing the sea. The formwork was lined with rough-sawn boards from a dismantled fish-drying rack nearby, leaving a faint timber grain on every surface. Rainwater runs down open channels in the walls and gathers in a shallow pool at the entrance, mirroring the cliff. The pavilion closes in winter by sliding two heavy steel doors across its openings, becoming a sealed stone object until spring.
