About
Steypa is a gallery annex added to a modernist art school in Akureyri, on the edge of Iceland's longest fjord. The new wing is a sequence of white concrete boxes stepping down the slope, each top-lit through a deep north-facing lantern that gives the even light artists asked for. Externally, the volumes are cast with a fine vertical rib that catches snow and shadow differently through the seasons. A precast concrete screen wraps the stair between levels, filtering daylight into a moving pattern on the floor. Inside, the galleries are kept deliberately neutral, with polished concrete floors and walls left free of any fixed fittings.
