About

The Grjót Library extends a 1950s school building in the centre of Ísafjörður into a public library and reading room for the whole fjord. A new board-marked concrete volume is set against the old structure, its rhythm of deep vertical fins shading the reading tables from low summer sun while catching every hour of winter light. Inside, a wide stair doubles as seating for readings and town meetings. The existing school corridor was kept as a gallery for local history, connecting old and new with a single long view down the fjord. Materials are left raw and honest — concrete, oak, and wool felt for acoustics — so that the building can age alongside its community.
